Presentation -> Adresses and Trips
The city is in 40 miles east of Agadir and in approximately 150 miles in the southwest of Marrakesh, along the oued (or assif) Souss. Taroudant counts approximately 65 000 people and the province of Taroudant is one of the biggest of Morocco. Taroudant or Taroudannt, (pronounce "Taroudannte") is situated in the valley of Souss, surrounded by two mountain ranges, the Height-atlas in the North and in the East, Anti-Atlas in the South; on the West, the plain opens on the Atlantic Ocean. This fertile valley is crossed by the Oued Souss which goes along the city. The province of Taroudant has, on its territory, most high mountain of North Africa, the Mountain Toubkal, in Arabic Jebel Toubkal, in Berber, Adrar N' Dern, à 4.167 m. The origin of the Berber name Taroudant is enigmatic: certain legends associate it to a Syrian princess who had settled down in the region and who carried the name of " Queen Roudana ", the others explain it by the Berber sentence " Taroua ddante " which wants to say " The children were taken by the water " which shouted a Berber woman when the floods took her children, or, in amazigh, the story of a woman who cried her gone to war sons. But the name of Taroudant has to come more probably from fig trees which were a tree very answered in the region and named " troughodant ". Taroudant is famous for her agricultural production and of citrus fruits (essentially orange and clementines), for the oil of argan, specific in the region and the olive oil, and for her crafts (very varied, tannery, pottery, etc.) as well as her magnificent landscapes. This city looked to the whole country, a plethora of people in charge, businessmen, monks, intellectuals, doctors and scholars, so assuring the perpetuity and the fame of the city. A particular mention returns to her inhabitants for their hospitality and Hassan El Wazzan, more known under the name of Léon the African had noticed during his journeys that the inhabitants of Taroudant, are “peaceful people who never offend their neighbours”.
